Indian Releases

Teen Thay Bhai

Studio – PVR Pictures (Previous Film: Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey)
Director - Mrigdeep Singh Lamba (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Three unlucky, unfortunate and almost penniless brothers, who cannot see eye to eye, meet at the reading of their dying grandfather's will. The eccentric grandfather has left them an inheritance that will free them from their financial woes but for that they will have go through a series of bizarre clauses the grandfather has set them in the will. The three brothers will have to spend a night at a cabin on the estate. This has to be repeated once every year and they are through with the first two years. It is the last and final year as the brother meet once again, at the snowed out cabin.

Experimental, parallel, low budget or whatever you call it; Indian cinema has started seeing something different in the recent years, and Teen Thay Bhai belongs to one of those categories. It does not have a great star cast but has 3 bankable actors, especially the veteran Om Puri (but I don't know how people are going to react to the age differences between the brothers). It does not have a huge budget that most films have but has a decent storyline. It has a debutant director at the helm but we all know that many debutants have done well in the recent past, in fact so well that they've given the mainstream directors a run for their money. The trailer's impressive and the chemistry among the actors seems to be good. The big problem might be the box office fate of this film as the IPL season's going on and it will have to rely heavily on the word of mouth publicity to draw audiences to the cinema halls. With so many doubts in mind it sure cannot be the Pick Of The Week but definitely deserves a chance.

Unknown

Studios – Studio Canal (Previous Film: The Tourist) + Many Others
Director - Jaume Collet-Serra (Previous Film: Orphan)

In a nutshell....

Dr. Martin Harris, or as he calls himself, wakes up from coma after 4 days, in Berlin, where he's on a vacation. An accident is the last thing he remembers but doesn't know the whereabouts of his beloved wife. Slowly he discovers that somebody has taken his identity and nobody, including his wife, seems to believe him. His existence is itself in question. Gina, the driver of the taxi which met the accident, is the only one who seems to believe him and can help him find the truth.

Although there have been a few films based on lost identity, Unknown has an intriguing storyline and seems to be very very interesting. It's got all the ingredients of a fantastic thriller/mystery, and two powerful actors in Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger (no wonder she's the German taxi driver). This film released in the UK and US last month and it did awesomely well both on the box office and critically. It indeed is what it promises to be, i.e. Taken meets Bourne Identity. I've waited long for this one to release and am very glad it's finally come here.

Rango

Production Cos.DW Films, Industrial Light & Magic, GK Films, Nickelodeon Films, Blind Wink (Debut)
(Previous Film: No Strings Attached, Work In Progress, The Tourist, The Last Airbender)
Director - Gore Verbinski (Previous Film: Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End)

In a nutshell....

Rango is a pet chameleon who ends up in a Western town called Dirt. Rango has always thought of himself like a hero and also struts about the town dressed sheriff like. But the good ones have been sent to the grave by the local bandits and Rango's life is also in threat as the goons want him dead. Thus Rango is put in a situation which he always dreamed of but never really knew how to face it. Will he survive?

Well a Johnny Depp film is always interesting, especially his look and his charisma on screen. But this time it's about his voice, and just like in Corpse Bride, Rango's very interesting. It is the first time we'll see a chameleon as the protagonist which is certainly imaginative and unique. Besides, one can always expect fireworks when Gore Verbinski directs a film. The film's done a splendid job on the US and UK box and earned praises from all age groups. I believe this one's going to do a superbly here too and will also win the hearts of Indian young kids. Would've been the Pick Of The Week if it wasn't supposed to release with Unknown.

Scream 4

Studio
– Dimension Films
(Previous Film: Piranha)
Director - Wes Craven (Previous Film: My Soul To Take)

In a nutshell....

Sidney Prescott returns to her hometown of Woodsboro on the 15th anniversary of the first Woodsboro murders, for a tour of her new self-help book. She encounters her former allies Sheriff Dewey Riley and entertainment journalist Gale Weathers, as well as her younger cousin Jill Roberts, her best friend Kirby Reed, and several of Jill's high school friends. The slasher killer Ghostface returns, and is stalking and killing Jill's friends and several other people in the area. This time the killer is taking references from horror movie remakes. In order to survive, Sidney, Dewey, Gale and Jill will have to anticipate and follow the conventions of the 21st century horror films to determine who the killer is.

Wes Craven returns to direct another Scream film full of murders and blondes. I couldn't help but sympathise with the kind of trailer they've made for this one. It lacks the thrills and chills, and by no means feels like an interesting horror. The quality of the films have drastically reduced ever since the first Scream film released, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this one being the worst amongst all. However, the story is quite interesting this time but whether it's executed well remains to be seen. On the box office, Scream 4 will do well because of the large fan base it has but I hope the fans get something better than the last two films.

Splice

Studio – Warner Bros. Pictures (Previous Film: Sucker Punch)
Director - Vincenzo Natali (Indian Theatrical Debut)

In a nutshell....

Two young rebellious scientists decide to secretly work on their experiment after they are told by their employers to halt their groundbreaking experiments of splicing various organisms' DNA. But now, at their free will they go a step further and splice in human DNA.

One thing I don't understand is why Splice is releasing in India after 10 months of its original release in the US, especially when it has such an interesting story and Adrien Brody in the lead. In fact, the DVDs have also come out which is why one thinks what made them wait to release it here before. Perhaps the reason is that it wasn't a huge success, and despite a decent attempt it wasn't the blockbuster it was expected to be. However, as per the reviews and viewer ratings, it is a nice film and I'm sure the audiences will enjoy it because of its thrills. I'm waiting for it and would watch it in the cinemas instead of the DVD.

  2. At your service, sir. ;)
As suggested to be the Pick Of The Week, I watched Unknown today. It's a nice one, and is true to its word i.e. Taken meets Bourne. Go for it.
