Indian Releases

Patiala House

Studios – Hari Om Entertainment Co., T-Series, People Tree Films Pvt. Ltd., Credence Motion Picture
(Previous Film: Tees Maar Khan, Kajraare, Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai, Say Salaam India)
Director - Nikhil Advani (Previous Film: Chandni Chowk To China)

In a nutshell....

The Kahlons reside at the Patiala House in England. Despite residing in England, head of the family, Gurtej Kahlon, is against the British way of living and expects each member of his family to respect Sikhism and follow the Indian culture. When his elder son, Parghat a.k.a. Gattu, a fast bowler, expresses his love for cricket and his willingness to play for the England cricket team, Gurtej bans his son from playing cricket at all. For seventeen years, Gattu runs a store at the corner. At 34, Gattu gets an offer to play for the English cricket team again and this time his love, Simran, backs him to go against the unfair rules of Patiala House, and live his dream.

Patiala House seems to have all the right ingredients to be a potential hit, especially good performances and a relevant story. Besides, it is a huge relief to finally see Akshay Kumar doing a serious film, who's been a waste in his past 5-6 comedies. The Hindi film industry has seen a nice start to the year and I believe Patiala House will add to the celebrations, especially with the hit jodi of Rishi-Akshay coming back together. Nikhil Advani's graph of success is as steep as the slopes of a hill, which is the only reason why I have doubts about this film.

Angel

Studios – Pushpa Krishna Creations (Debut)
Director - Ganesh Acharya (Previous Film: Swami)

In a nutshell....

Angel is a love story about a mentally challenged girl, Sonal and her friend Abhay.

I know one would say Hrithik and Amisha were newcomers as well when they did Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, so why not this new pair so I'd like to say why not. First, this film is directed by Ganesh Acharya, better off as a choreographer, whose previous film (Money Hai Toh Honey Hai) was worse than pathetic. Second, the actors seem to be putting in too much but it looks too naive to be taken seriously. I and a friend had been to the cinema for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows - Part 1, when we saw Angel's trailer first, and believe me, we didn't even care to reflect on the trailer. Not because we were so excited about HP7, but it just wasn't appealing enough. And trailers do say a lot. This film will shatter at the box office as it faces unbeatable competition from the Akshay Kumar starrer Patiala House, plus as many as 4-5 foreign releases. Thumbs down to this one,

Unknown

Studios – Studio Canal (Previous Film: The Tourist) + Many Others
Director - Jaume Collet-Serra (Previous Film: Orphan)

In a nutshell....

Dr. Martin Harris, or as he calls himself, wakes up from coma after 4 days, in Berlin, where he's on a vacation. An accident is the last thing he remembers but doesn't know the whereabouts of his beloved wife. Slowly he discovers that somebody has taken his identity and nobody, including his wife, seems to believe him. His existence is itself in question. Gina, the driver of the taxi which met the accident, is the only one who seems to believe him and can help him find the truth.

Although there have been a few films based on lost identity, Unknown has an amazing storyline and seems to be very interesting. It's got all the ingredients of a fantastic thriller and two powerful actors in Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger, no wonder she's the German taxi driver. If this film certainly releases this week, we Indians will be very lucky to watch it before it hits the US and UK screens. I think this film will rock, especially for its writing and performances. Go Neeson!

The Mechanic

Studios – Millennium films, Nu image Entertainment (Previous Releases: Double Identity, Day Of The Dead)
Director - Simon West (Previous Work: When A Stranger Calls)

In a nutshell....

Arthur Bishop is an elite assassin whose talent lies in cleanly eliminating targets by detaching himself from the victim. But when his mentor and friend, Harry, is killed, Bishop takes it as a personal loss and begins working on vengeance. Harry's son, Steve, also seeks vengeance, and an alliance with Arthur, who would also teach him his trade. Arthur cannot say 'no' to Harry's son and thus takes Steve under his wing. Together they form a deadly partnership but they face deceptions on their way to vengeance.

Jason Statham is almost the new name for action. The lean, mean Brit is getting better with all his action films and sure looks deadlier in this one. The storyline isn't unique but is interesting, and the action sequences do seem to take your breath away. Besides, the film is opening in the US and UK which means this film's going to see a great opening. I think The Mechanic is bound to be a hit.

The Rite

Studios – Contrafilm, Fletcher & Company (Previous Releases: Choke, Debut)
Director - Michael Hafstrom (Previous Work: Shanghai)

In a nutshell....

The Rite is about a disillusioned young American priest who travels to The Vatican to study how to carry out exorcisms. He finds his faith renewed as he fights the demonic forces.

This film has an interesting tale which is based on a true story. Hafstrom has this liking for dark thrillers and we can expect more of that in The Rite. How Anthony Hopkins acts in this one is what I'd love to find out. Since this is going to be the first release for the film, it'd be exciting to see how people react to it. There's enough spark in the trailer which suggests it will scary many. I think it will do well and will fetch decent reviews.

No Strings Attached

Studios – Cold Spring Pictures, Katalyst Films (Previous Releases: Up In The Air, Killers)
Director - Ivan Reitman (Previous Work: My Super Ex - Girlfriend)

In a nutshell....

Emma and Adam are very good friends and but have nothing enough to get into a relationship. However they cannot resist each other and start a sexual relationship, with strictly No Strings Attached as Emma wants to stay away from any sort of commitment. The entire film is about whether two people can remain involved in a sexual relationship without love getting in their way.

The trailer says it all. This film has 'sex' written all over it. Whether it is done cheaply or sensually remains to be seen but we've already seen many such films in the past. There's a lot of comedy which might just help this film do wonders only if it isn't crude. On the whole I don't think this one shows great promise but there's sure a lot of eye candy for both the sexes.

Runtime - 108 mins
Genre - Comedy/Romance
Rated - A

Principal Cast

Natalie Portman – Emma (Last seen in: Black Swan)
Ashton Kutcher – Adam (Last seen in: Killers)
Kevin Kline – Alvin (Last seen in: The Extra Man)
