Yeh Saali Zindagi

Studios – Cine Raas Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. (Debut), Prakash Jha Productions
(Previous Film: Turning 30!!!)
Director - Sudhir Mishra (Previous Film: Khoya Khoya Chand)

In a nutshell....

Arun loves Preeti, and Preeti loves Shyam who is supposed to marry a powerful minister's daughter who no longer likes Shyam and doesn't mind if he is dead. Meanwhile Kuldeep's last gangster job goes haywire as his wife threatens to leave him. Preeti finds herself in all this mess and Arun wants to save her. Money, love and dons coming down from Bangkok make all these people's lives entangled and who has the last laugh is to be found out.

Sudhir Mishra knows how to make real life like thrillers without going over the top and making it larger than life. Besides, these actors are from a different class, they're not stars but they're real actors. I think Yeh Saali Zindagi will work because it has this new age cinema appeal and the masses will also enjoy the thaan-thaan and romance. Mishra has always something different to offer and this one shouldn't be an exception.

Sanctum

Studios – Relativity Media, Universal Pictures, Sanctum Australia
(Previous Release: Season Of The Witch, Biutiful, Debut)
Director - Alister Grierson (UK Debut)

In a nutshell....

Frank, with his team of underwater cave divers which include his 17 year old son, Josh, and financier, Carl, goes on a treacherous expedition to the largest, least accessible and the most beautiful cave system on earth. The exit of the South Pacific caves is cut off because of flash floods. Now, this team has to navigate an underwater labyrinth to exit the caves but they must fight raging water and deadly terrains to see themselves safe, but they have limited supplies. So, would they survive or succumb?

There's a lot of hype around this film considering the big name of James Cameron attached to it. He said it was decided to shoot this film in 3D to make the viewers feel closer to the experiences of the diving team; and there seems to be a decent dose of adventure in this one. But what puts me in doubt is the team of the debutant director and writers. No doubt Cameron knows exactly what he does but this time around I think he'll falter, and I give this credit of possible failure to him because they're promoting the film using only his name. Some of the sequences from the trailer reminded me of Brazil (the movie). So I just hope this one doesn't turn out to be a damp squib.

Biutiful

Studios – Menageatorz, Mod Producciones, Ikiru Films (Previous Releases: Debut, Agora, Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer)
Director - Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Previous Work: Babel)

In a nutshell....

Uxbal is a tragic hero and a father of two, who is connected to the afterlife on the road to redemption. He struggles with a tainted reality and a fate that works against him in order to forgive, for love, and forever.

I've already watched this 'biutiful' film at the Mumbai Film Festival and therefore it'd be more like a review if I go on to write about it. So I guess I'd just say that this film is more for the festival audiences who relish the cinematic visions of serious filmmakers, and isn't at all entertaining; but then again what can you expect from the master, Inarritu, whose film people watched sitting in the aisle after waiting for an hour in the queue outside the cinema hall at the Mumbai Film Festival. Bardem's won the Best Actor award at Cannes for this one which isn't a surprise at all.

United Six

Studios – White House Productions Limited (Previous Film: Mr. White Mr. Black)
Director - Vishal Aryan Singh (Debut)

In a nutshell....

United Six is about 6 young girls who wish to get rid of their usual lives of boyfriends and jobs. Thus they decide to rob a bank to fetch 20 million. The girls plan and prepare the robbery and set on. But they scrap their plans at the last moment as they get scared and leave the scene. The next morning they watch the news on television that the bank got robbed. Now the United Six seek to find out the truth behind the robbery.

Having worked with Parvathy Omanakuttan during a talent cum fashion show, I thought she had a good taste about things. And when I did not see her in any film as soon as she won Miss India World and was first runner up at the Miss World 2008 competition, I thought she might be taking her own sweet time to get the perfect film to debut with. But United Six seems far from it. Take 5 debutantes and a one film old actress and make them wear scanty clothes, shoot an item song and try and make them look smart, you get United Six. The writer/director is a debutant too. Every part of this trailer shouts out and says aloud.... 'this is a dumb chic flick meets Charlies Angels' type of film. God save the careers of these six girls, the director and the investors. Wouldn't even be my last choice out of the 8 films releasing this week.

The Mechanic

Studios – Millennium films, Nu image Entertainment (Previous Releases: Double Identity, Day Of The Dead)
Director - Simon West (Previous Work: When A Stranger Calls)

In a nutshell....

Arthur Bishop is an elite assassin whose talent lies in cleanly eliminating targets by detaching himself from the victim. But when his mentor and friend, Harry, is killed, Bishop takes it as a personal loss and begins working on vengeance. Harry's son, Steve, also seeks vengeance, and an alliance with Arthur, who would also teach him his trade. Arthur cannot say 'no' to Harry's son and thus takes Steve under his wing. Together they form a deadly partnership but they face deceptions on their way to vengeance.

Jason Statham is almost the new name for action. The lean, mean Brit is getting better with all his action films and sure looks deadlier in this one. The storyline isn't unique but is interesting, and the action sequences do seem to take your breath away. Besides, the film is opening in the US and UK which means this film's going to see a great opening. I think The Mechanic is bound to be a hit.

Utt Pataang

Studios – Rash Productions (Debut), Warner Bros (Previous Film: Phas Gaye Re Obama)
Director - Srikanth V. Velagaleti (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Utt Pataang is a story of one night full of madness. Ram is on the brink of breaking up with his girlfriend (Mahie). He is also caught in a dangerous money deal involving 5 crores. Caught in this deal are Lucky, his detective friend (Surabh Shukla), his muse (Mona Singh). The layers of secrecy unfold with increasing humour.

Vinay Pathak and Sanjay Mishra have done countless films where you'd love them even more than the lead actors. Warner Bros have produced some nice Indian comedies and Utt Patang seems to have all what it takes for a small budget film with no stars, despite the debutant director. The story's nice and perfect to create comical sequences and Shukla's dialogues will sure make us laugh. I think it should do good business as well. Another Phas Gaye Re Obama or Bheja Fry on the cards?

Nominated for Oscars, Inside Job is a must watch for everyone as it is about something that affected everybody living on the face of earth in some or the other way. Love And Other Impossible Pursuits (a.k.a. The Other Woman)

Studios – Incentive Filmed Entertainment (Debut), Is Or Isn't Entertainment (Debut),
Handsomecharlie Films, Marc Platt Productions (Previous Film: No Strings Attached, Charlie St. Cloud)
Director - Don Roos (Previous Film: Happy Endings)

In a nutshell....

Jack and Carolyne are married and have a young son, William. Due to some indifferences, Carolyne and Jack decide to split. Jack soon marries Emilia and the two have a daughter, Isabel, who dies when she is just 3 days old. Emilia's difficult situation gets worse as she now tries to improve her relationship with her stepson.

Natalie Portman seems to be a perfect fit for the role of Emilia. She's a great spree of superb performances lately, and this one I guess just adds another feather to her cap. Also known as The Other Woman, this film has a nice and relevant storyline and was spoken good of at the Toronto Film Festival, especially about Portman's role. I think this one's not worth missing especially if you love Natalie, just like I.

Runtime - 119 mins

The Roommate

Studios – Vertigo Entertainment, Screen Gems (Previous Film: How To Train Your Dragon, Country Strong)
Director - Christian E. Christiansen (US Debut)

In a nutshell....

College student Sara is excited to start a new college life, and is assigned a dorm with a new room-mate, Rebecca. Both the girls bond well and develop a nice friendship. On a trip to Rebecca's home, Sara learns about Rebecca's peculiar condition from her mother. Rebecca's feelings get stronger for Sara and she starts killing those whom she feels as a possible threat to Sara and her friendship. Thus she controls Sara's life.
The Roommate does seem to be an interesting film but I think it might just be one of those cheap films that you and I would rather feel pity for than fully enjoy, simply because such films spoil the story by having cheesy inputs. I am not trying to write it off, but on the face of it it seems so. With this one, I just hope I am wrong.

The Fighter (Releasing on 2nd Feb)

Studios – Closest To The Hole Productions (Debut), Fighter (Debut), Mandeville Films (Debut),
The Weinstein Company (Previous Film: Piranha)

The Fighter is based on the real life story of a boxer, Micky Ward, who journeys on an unlikely road to the world light welterweight title. His half brother Dicky, an ex-boxer, trains him to fight the odds just like he fights against his own involvement in drugs and crime.

This film has done superbly in the US and the other nations where it has released. Fabulous, marvellous and such other adjectives have been used to describe the performance of Christian Bale who's already won the Golden Globe for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Besides, Melissa Leo's also won the Golden Globe for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role. With 7 nominations for this year's Academy Awards, this film has to be the pick of the month.

Rabbit Hole

Studios – Odd Lot Entertainment, Blossom Films (Debut), Olympus Pictures (Previous Film: The Spirit, Adam)
Director - John Cameron Mitchell (Previous Film: Shortbus)

In a nutshell....

Becca and Howie lose their young son, Danny, by a car accident. Becca tries to find solace in a surreal world of a perfect family and friends. Her quest leads her into mysterious relationship with a young comic book artist, Jason, who was actually the driver of the car that killed Danny. On the other hand, trying forget his son's death, Howie seeks refuge in outsiders who provide him things that Becca can't. The loss of their son takes the husband and wife away from each other.

This film's an adaptation of a Pulitzer winning play, and does seem to be touching and moving. The performances especially seem to be the most important thing about Rabbit Hole, which explores various shades of the husband and wife who are trying to come out of a shock. I am looking forward to Nicole Kidman's act as she seems brilliant from the trailers. This film, I believe, should do well.

A Little Bit Of Heaven

Studios – Davis Entertainment, The Film Department(Previous Film: Gulliver's Travels, Law Abiding Citizen)
Director - Nicole Kassell (Previous Film: The Woodsman)

In a nutshell....

A Little Bit Of Heaven is about Marley who finds out she's got cancer and starts bonding with her family and friends. She starts falling in love with her doctor and soon realises that now falling in love would be scarier than death.

With a nice story and comic situations, especially Whoopi Goldberg playing God, this film seems interesting. It's certainly a sad situation to be in and this film just rightly seems to explore the feelings of such a person. I think it doesn't have a great chance in terms of box office collections but it sure will make a few smile. I just hope it doesn't end up becoming a silly chic flick.
