US Releases

Thor

StudioParamount Pictures (Previous Film: No Strings Attached)
Director - Kenneth Branagh (Previous Film: Sleuth)

In a nutshell....

Thor is a powerful but arrogant God from Asgard. He is cast out of the realm and sent to earth to live with humans. He soon becomes the their defender and saviour.

So now we meet the second hero from the Avengers. This mighty God is one of the best Avengers, and perhaps the only one to have such supernatural powers. Chris Hemsworth's casting was a huge doubt in my mind but ever since I watched the trailer it just disappeared. I'm excited to watch this one especially because Thor is a multidimensional character and somebody with the experience and the goodness of Kenneth Branagh will know how to deal with it. The 3D will add to the whole experience and this film will do wonders on the box office especially because it leads to Avengers. The collections at the Indian and UK box offices were huge and the limited US release also saw a great opening.

Jumping The Broom

Studio – TriStar Pictures (Previous Film: Soul Surfer)
Director - Salim Akil (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Two families from opposite sides of the social circle come together for a marriage on the island of Martha's Vineyard, where two members from both families shall get married.

This film might not have a star cast and big names but it sure has an interesting story and that's what matters the most. Although this is Salim Akil's first film, he knows these genres well because of his television experience. The social gap has been dealt with very subtly, I believe. Jumping The Broom might not have a great run at the box office but it might possibly win some hearts.

Something Borrowed

StudioWarner Bros. Pictures (Previous Film: Arthur)
Director - Luke Greenfield (Previous Film: The Girl Next Door)

In a nutshell....

Rachel White is un unhappy, single, talented attorney working in a New York law firm. She drinks too much on her 30th, and finds herself with Dex, her crush from law school. The problem is that he is also her best friend, Darcy's husband-to-be. Relationships and friendships are tested as Ethan, a long term friend of Rachel, stands by her with a secret of his own.

Something Borrowed is another film releasing this week that does not have a star cast. Such films have to rely on a good story and a well written screenplay. I think this film's overall theme is a little cliched but having said that, there is some good drama on the cards. Such films don't raise the expectation levels and that is what works in their favour most times. I think this film's box office collections will be average but with the backing of Warner Bros. one can expect some quality.

The Beaver

Studio
– Summit Entertainment
(Previous Film: Drive Angry 3D)
Director - Jodie Foster (Previous Film: Home For Holidays)

In a nutshell....

A depressed CEO of a toy company, Walter Black uses a hand-puppet, a beaver, as the only means to communicate with people, especially his wife and two children.

The Beaver has a fantastic storyline and seems to have a lot of depth to it in terms of finding one's voice and life back. The most important aspects of the film are Mel Gibson's acting and Foster's direction. Both seem to have a lot of substance and sure will be heart pleasing. With a limited release, the box office collections shall also be limited, but the film will definitely make an impact and will engage the audiences. The touch of humour to the seriousness of the situations will add to the experience. I really want to find out if the Beaver stays or goes.

Last Night

Studio – Tribeca Films (Previous Film: Neds)
Director - Massy Tadjedin (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Michael and Joanna Reed are happy with their 7 year old successful relationship. Michael sets out on a business trip with his stunningly beautiful and tempting work colleague, whom he has never mentioned at home. On the other hand, Joanna bumps into an old-but-not-forgotten flame, Alex, and has drinks with him. As the night progresses, temptation increases, and the men and women must figure out who they are and whom they are happy with.

We've seen so many films so far, that test relationships by putting them in awkward and tempting situations and then teasing and questioning the fidelity of people involved. Last Night is just about such temptations but with the kind of treatment of this film I think it will belong to the good ones and not the bad, cliched ones. Besides, it has a strong and popular cast which will work in its favour. Massy Tadjedin might not have directed any films before but his writing has been very good. I think it will do well despite the limited release and will manage to beat the competition.

Runtime - 90 mins
Genre - Drama/Romance
Rated - R

Principal Cast

Keira Knightley - Joanna Reed (Last seen in: Never Let Me Go)
Sam Worthington – Michael Reed (Last seen in: Clash Of The Titans)

Passion Play

Studio – Image Entertainment (Previous Film: Gun)
Director - Mitch Glazer (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Nate, a small-time jazz musician, stumbles upon a circus and gets immediately attracted to the exotic beauty of Lily. Lily is cold and dismissive but it dawns on her that the gentle giant, Nate, is the only one who can take her away from the mess. For the protective and understanding Nate, Lily's beauty makes her unique. As their bond deepens, Nate realises that his dreams might be shattered by the rich, heartless businessman, Happy Shannon.

Finally Megan Fox has something serious to do but it's hard to imagine Mickey Rourke in this type of a role. The base of the story is somewhat cliched but the treatment doesn't seem so. The fact that there are two powerful male actors in the lead, and one of the most famous and appealing actresses will be the bone of contention, makes me feel there's a lot in store. But somewhere there is also this doubt about the telling faltering.
