UK Releases

Water For Elephants

Studio
– Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
(Previous Film: Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son)
Director - Francis Lawrence (Previous Film: I Am Legend)

In a nutshell....

Jacob Jankowski, now ninety, remembers his teenage days when he was a veterinary student and was put in charge of caring caring for a circus menagerie. There he met and fell in love with the beautiful equestrian star, Marlena, married to August, a charismatic but twisted animal trainer.

Based on one of the most famous novels of recent times, Water For Elephants has a decent storyline, and the potential to be a nice drama. The setting seems to be perfectly stylised and the trailer has an evidence of some brilliant cinematography. Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz form a wonderful trio which will be the main reason why people will flock to the theatres. But with a romantic drama centred based in a circus, I'm not sure how keen the audiences will be to watch this one, especially those who haven't read the novel. I think this film will not have a great box office opening irrespective of it being good or bad, and I hope it doesn't end up looking like a circus.

Priest

Studio
– Sony Pictures
(Previous Film: The Roommate)
Director - Scott Charles Stewart (Previous Film: Legion)

In a nutshell....

The Priest, a legendary warrior from the last Vampire war, lives in obscurity among other downtrodden humans in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the church. Priest breaks his sacred vows when his niece is captured by the vampires and has to protect her before they turn her into one of them. On his quest to save his niece, he is joined by the girl's boyfriend, a young sheriff, and a former warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly powers.

So much has been experimented in the sci-fi genre and majority of it has succeeded or at least had some or the other kind of impact, negative or positive. Priest is yet another attempt to be different in the family of these genres. I think it has an interesting story and looks impressive in terms of how it is made. I hope the makers have made proper use of the 3D technology and that this one isn't just like many other gimmicks. The actors are bankable and so I think Priest has a decent chance of having a good run on the box office.

Hanna

Studio – Focus Features (Previous Film: Jane Eyre)
Director - Joe Wright (Previous Film: The Soloist)

In a nutshell....

Hanna is a unique teenage girl who has the strength, stamina, and the smarts of a soldier, thanks to her ex-CIA father, Erik's training, who wants her to become a perfect assassin. Hanna sets on a mission and journeys across Europe while terminating agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative, Marissa, who has her own secrets. As she nears her last target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence, and unexpected questions are raised about her humanity.

Spectacular was the only word that came to mind when I watched the trailer. It's shot very well, has got a decent story, and the setting is unusual. Saoirse is a great talent, and when pitted against an actress like Cate Blanchett, it'll be fascinating to see how the young girl has taken up the challenge. It will also be interesting to learn how the ever successful, Joe Wright, copes with the genres he has never worked upon. But talent always remains, which is why I think Hanna will be a breathtaking experience, and will do wonders on the box office too, just like it did in the UK.

Something Borrowed

StudioWarner Bros. Pictures (Previous Film: Arthur)
Director - Luke Greenfield (Previous Film: The Girl Next Door)

In a nutshell....

Nova Prescott finds herself drawn to Jesse who comes in the way of her perfect prom. Several other seniors come together for this most anticipated night as they look forward to enjoy it among insecurities, and building and breaking relationships.

Something Borrowed is another film releasing this week that does not have a star cast. Such films have to rely on a good story and a well written screenplay. I think this film's overall theme is a little cliched but having said that, there is some good drama on the cards. Such films don't raise the expectation levels and that is what works in their favour most times. I think this film's box office collections will be average but with the backing of Warner Bros. one can expect some quality.
