Source Code

StudioSummit Entertainment (Previous Film: Red)
Director - Duncan Jones (Previous Film: Moon)

In a nutshell....

Captain Colter Stevens wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers that he is a part of the mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. He learns he is a part of a government experiment called the 'Source Code', a program that enables him to switch over into another man's identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. Colter relives the incident again and again until he gathers all the clues that lead to the person behind the attack and prevent the second, bigger attack.

Source Code gets all the brownie points from me for such a unique concept. In the times of ever increasing numbers of experimental plots, this one is perhaps right up there with the likes of Inception. Besides, being experimental is not just enough, like in the case of Sucker Punch. Source Code also seems to have soul and that is what makes the different story much more impressive. Besides, I think Jake Gyllenhaal fits the role perfectly, and I'm eager to find out if Duncan Jones is really a director to watch out. With a worldwide release planned for it, I think Source Code will do wonders on the box office.

Trust

Studio – Millennium Films (Previous Film: Drive Angry 3D)
Director - David Schwimmer (Previous Film: Run, Fatboy, Run)

In a nutshell....

Fourteen year old Annie is gifted a laptop on her birthday. She meets her first boyfriend, online and trusts him completely. After communicating with him for several months on the computer and chat phone, they decide to meet. She discovers that the friend is not somebody who he actually claimed to be, and that man takes undue advantage of her. Annie's parents are shocked in disbelief and struggle to support their daughter during the tough times as Annie tries to recover from the emotional blow and retain her innocence.

Based on a very sensitive subject which has affected millions of families across the globe, Trust is an eye opener for those who forgot they need to be responsible. Debutante Liana Liberato got the Audience Choice Award for the Best Actress at the Chicago Film Festival, and the film was the official selection for the Toronto Film Festival. It promises to be a fantastic film, and I've read and heard very good things about it from the festival goers. Clive Owen is one of my favourite British actors and he too seems to be in good form. Therefore I'm really looking forward to watch this film when I get a chance to. In the meantime people in the US can enjoy this film and learn a thing or two from it.

Super

StudioIFC Midnight (Previous Film: Peep World)
Director - James Gunn (Previous Film: Slither)

In a nutshell....

Frank, a normal guy, transforms himself into a superhero, Crimson Bolt, after his wife, Sarah, hooks up with a smooth-talking drug dealer, Jock. Libby, a local comic store employee, also transforms herself, into Boltie. She becomes a sidekick to Crimson Bolt and together they aspire to bring the drug dealer down, although they lack powers.

With ideas for new superheroes running out, filmmakers are now turning to creating characters who become superheroes without having any special powers. It started with Kick Ass, and now it seems Super will take this trend forward. And I think this one is as interesting as Kick Ass. With Ellen Page in top form and Rainn Wilson's crazy theatrics, I expect this film to have a lot of funny sequences and situations where you won't just stop laughing. Having said that, I hope it does not falter because this trend of powerless, ordinary people becoming superheroes, is fun. This might only be James Gunn's second film after the nice comedy Slither, but he has also written some funnier films including the two Scooby-Doo flicks, and Shawn Of The Dead. At the box office, I believe it will do a decent job and perhaps also add dimension to these type of films.

Hop

Studio – Universal Pictures (Previous Film: The Adjustment Bureau)
Director - Tim Hill (Previous Film: Alvin And The Chipmunks)

In a nutshell....

E.B., a teenage rabbit, takes over from his father as the Easter Bunny and leaves home for Hollywood to pursue his dream of becoming a drummer of a rock 'n' roll band. He is hit by out of work Fred O'Hare, who was driving back home. E.B. manipulates Fred to take him home. As he recovers, both learn what it takes to grow up.

When a writer/director who has written one of the most successful animated television series, SpongeBob SqaurePants, and directed films like Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Garfield, which weren't the best of films but were funny enough to entertain their target audience, comes with his next venture, you expect it to be better and funnier. And Hop looks exactly like that. It has a nice story to back with some funny punchlines and situations. But, I've noticed that some comedy films in the recent times put all the good scenes in the trailer, and you go expecting something on the similar lines to happen throughout the film, and at the end you realise that all the funny scenes were put in the trailer and there was nothing else in the rest of the film. I just hope Hop is not one of those films. Russell Brand and James Marsden's chemistry is the most important thing to look out for. I think it will fare well on the box office and the kids will enjoy this film.

Insidious

StudioFilmDistrict (Previous Film: Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark)
Director - James Wan (Previous Film: Death Sentence)

In a nutshell....

A young family discovers that the body of their comatose child attracts evil entities while the boy's mind is trapped in a dark realm known as The Further.

I have to admit that this is one of the best horror film trailers I've watched in recent times. A film, especially a horror, has to work well audio-visually, and I think Isidious's technical team has done a great job. The sound design in the trailer is spectacular. Most importantly it looks seriously well made, and I'm glad that it's not bloody and gory like most other recent horrors that have resorted to such theatrics to grab attention. Besides, it comes from the makers of Paranormal Activity, one of the most successful horror films of the last decade. James Wan has an eye for horror which he proved with Saw and that's why I have good expectations from Insidious. Whether it does well on the box office remains to be seen but I think it is interesting enough to be watched once, atleast.

Cat Run

StudioLleju Productions (Previous Film: After.Life)
Director - John Stockwell (Previous Film: Turistas)

In a nutshell....

A sexy high-end escort holds the key evidence to a scandalous government cover up. Two young bumbling become her unlikely protectors from a ruthless assassin who is hired to silence her.

I've seen many cheap thrillers, some I've liked while others I regretted watching. And this one, it seems, belongs to the second category. It has all the elements of a thriller but what it lacks is a reliable cast. Also, the director has made a few films like these before but all have failed to make an impact. I think this kind of films never succeed simply because they aren't made that way. Not wanna be too prejudiced about it but it sure gives me negative vibes and makes me feel that it won't do well at the box office especially with a limited release.
