Limitless

StudioRelativity Media (Previous Film: Battle: Los Angeles)
Director - Neil Burger (Previous Film: The Lucky Ones)

In a nutshell....

Eddie Morra is an unemployed copywriter and his girlfriend, Lindy, has broken up with him. Dejected, Eddie believes he has no future and feels hopeless. Just then a friend introduces him to an experimental drug, NZT. With the use of this drug Eddie becomes highly focused and confident, remembering everything he reads, hears and sees. He uses this ability to become successful in the financial world, and starts working for Karl Van Loon, a business mogul. Eddie's success attracts wrong people who want him dead. As he tries to escape from the clutches of the bad men, he also fights some disorders and irregularities happening from the drug.

I watched the trailer of this film once, twice, thrice and then again. So excited am I to watch this one that I can't wait for Friday to come. The idea of having a drug that could increase the potential of your brain to its maximum, startles me. Several things are possible if the brain works to its 100% capacity, and it seems Limitless explores quite a few of them. So far Neil Burger has written and directed all three of his films prior to this one, which he has only directed. The Illusionist is my favourite of them all, and it was also appreciated by many across the globe. Thus I have high hopes from this one as the director has had a good track record. A lot of women are crazy about Cooper, so are men about Cornish. We all love De Niro. Which means this film will see a huge opening at the box office, also considering that it is having a worldwide release. Limitless has a unique concept and is high on uberness quotient which is why it is my pick of the week. Wish this film provides entertainment limitless!

You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger

StudioSony Pictures Classics (Previous Film: Inside Job)
Director - Woody Allen (Previous Film: Whatever Works)

In a nutshell....

You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger follows two married couples Alfie and Helena, and their daughter and son-in-law Sally and Roy, as their lives go beyond control due their obsessions and ambitions. Alfie leaves Helena to relive his lost youth days and go after a prostitute Charmaine; Helena turns loopy at the advice of a charlatan fortune teller; Sally develops a crush on her art gallery boss, Greg, as Roy develops hots for Dia.

When a Woody Allen film hits the theatres, everyone is sure of two things: one, the film will be based on relationships and love with a touch of humour, and two, it'll be an awesome piece of work, and will be loved by one and all. In the past three decades, Allen's given us some supreme films that reflect various factors of relationships, mostly between lovers. You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger is no different and looks typical Woody Allen. However my viewpoint has changed towards this particular film, thanks and no thanks to the US release. The Americans said this film lacks that spark and magic that takes a film from being average to very good. With such a superb star cast I expected this film to do wonders but it seems less so. However, I believe Woody Allen films are always worth a watch and I'm still very much eager to watch it.

The Lincoln Lawyer

StudioLionsgate Films (Previous Film: From Prada To Nada)
Director - Brad Furman (Previous Film: The Take)

In a nutshell....

Mick Haller, a criminal defense lawyer from Los Angeles, operates from the back of his Lincoln car. Having spent most of his career fighting cases for all types of criminals, he gets the case of his career. Louis Roulet, a Beverly Hills playboy and the son of a major businessman, is accused of rape and attempted murder. Mick realises this straight forward case has a lot more than meets the eye.

Based on Michael Connelly's successful novel of the same name, The Lincoln Lawyer seems to have the perfect mix for a serious thriller. The trailer gives all the positive vibes that an engaging thriller should. Besides, the book has its own story of success. Brad Furman's previous and only film, The Take, had nothing exceptional to offer, but that doesn't mean that we can write The Lincoln Lawyer off. It definitely looks much more polished and interesting, and also has a nice cast. I hope this film is just as good as its source of adaptation. On the box office this film will face strong competition from Paul and Limitless, which might hamper its chances of having a good run.

Submarine

Production Co.Film4 (Previous Film: 127 Hours)
Director - Richard Ayoade (Previous Film: Arctic Monkeys At The Apollo)

In a nutshell....

Oliver Tate, a teenager from Swansea, is cool and a literary genius in his head but in reality he is socially inept and unpopular. He is convinced that his parents are having tensions in their marriage life and that his mother, Jill, is willing to leave his father, Lloyd, for her life coach, Graham. Oliver wants to sort out his family issues his way, and while doing so he also wants to lose his virginity to his girlfriend, Jordana, before he turns 16.

We all go through teenage problems and issues, they've made us laugh and also made us sad. Now it's time to see someone else suffer and enjoy the teen life. Submarine was the official selection at Sundance, Toronto, London and Berlin film festivals in 2010. This fact says it all about the credibility of this film. Besides, it's got an overwhelming response from the festival goers and the critics for its storytelling and a brilliant debut by Craig Roberts. Submarine is typically British, and does deserve a watch for the spectacular depiction on coming of age in a humorous way. It does make this film my pick of the week.

Chalet Girl (Releasing on 16th March, 2011)

Production Co.CrossDay Productions Ltd. (Previous Film: Heartless)
Director - Phil Trail (Previous Film: All About Steve)

In a nutshell....

Kim Matthews is a nineteen year old tomboy who used to be a skateboarding champion but has given up her passion as she now works to support her father. She gets an opportunity of a catering job at one of the most exclusive chalets in the Alps. Kim is baffled by this new world of rich people, champagne and skiing. But she gets a chance at snowboarding and sees a potential of winning the prize money of the annual championships. Will she be able to win the championship, thereby the money, and the heart of her so called boss, the young Jonnie?

Not many films have come out based in the setting of the Alps, and be a comedy. Therefore, Chalet Girl seems different in a way. This film has a decent cast and a good storyline but the director's first film was below average. He's directed many shows on tv, some good some not so good, which is why this film also looks a like a TV movie. However, it does seem to be joyful and can be opted for as a good weekend watch with a loved one or with family. It certainly isn't a box office ruling material but I hope people will feel nice after watching this film.

Route Irish

Production Co.Sixteen Films (Previous Film: Oranges And Sunshine)
Director - Ken Loach (Previous Film: Looking For Eric)

In a nutshell....

Set in Liverpool, Route Irish is the story of the consequences suffered by a private security contractor in Iraq who later rejects an official explanation about his friend's untimely death and sets out to find the truth. Route Irish refers to the Baghdad airport road.

Official selection in the competition section of Cannes Film Festival, this film seems to have enough quality to give a competition to any other good film. The wonderful combination of writer Paul Laverty, and director Ken Loach, has given us some memorable films, and Route Irish does seem to belong to that category. It has a nice plot and an interesting subject which, I believe, has never been tapped before. It's sad that so many films are releasing this week, which all have a potential to do well, which in turn makes it difficult to decide which film to watch first, which in turn will be harsh for one or many of these films with fewer people turning up. I hope this film doesn't have to go through Route Irish.
