Red Riding Hood

StudioWarner Bros. Pictures (Previous Film: Yogi Bear)
Director - Catherine Hardwicke (Previous Film: Twilight)

In a nutshell....

Valerie is a beautiful young woman who is in love with a brooding young lad, Peter. But, Valerie's parents want her to marry the wealthy Irons. Valerie and Peter plan to run away but they learn that Valerie's older sister is killed by the werewolf that prowls the surrounding dark forest. The villagers had, for years, maintained a truce with the wolf offering it a monthly animal sacrifice. But the wolf has grown wilder and taken to hunting down humans. Angered by this, the villagers seek the help of a famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon, to take revenge on the beast. Solomon's arrival brings unintended consequences, and he warns the villagers that the beast who takes human form in the day could be anyone of them. Will they find out who the werewolf is?

Based on one of the most famous fairy tales of all time, Red Riding Hood reminds me of my childhood. Not because it was as dark as this film is, or I'd known a werewolf, but because of the way my mother used to recite the whole story of the Little Red Cap and the Big Bad Wolf. That is why the director, Catherine Hardwicke, has a huge challenge at hand as she needs to portray and tell the story of the Red Riding Hood with equal effect, just like mothers recite stories to their children. I know this isn't a film targeted to kids but the storytelling will need to be very engaging, especially because we all are well familiar with the story. The fact that this film's directed by a woman might help. Besides, she's also got the experience of doing a werewolf film, Twilight. Thus I believe this film will be successful with a decent run at the box office. This is what I'd written for last week's US release preview. And how wrong was I. This film is worse than Twilight, that's what most filmy freaks and critics in America said. This woman first converted the child version to a teenage story and made it Twilight like with the ever doubtful Amanda Seyfried at the helm. I just hope, for the sake of this film, Twilight faithfuls enjoy it because no one else will. Avoid!

From Prada To Nada

Studios – Gilbert Films, Lionsgate, Odd Lot Entertainment (Previous Releases: The Kids Are Alright, The Next Three Days, Rabbit Hole)
Director - Angel Gracia (Debut)

In a nutshell....

From Prada To Nada is a Latina spin on Jane Austen's famous novel Sense and Sensibility. Two spoilt rich sisters are left penniless after their father's sudden death. They move to East Los Angeles to live with their estranged aunt and during their survival there, they realise the good and small things about life.

This film has a funny title but I have doubts about it because it's the director's debut film and the cast isn't too strong. But having said that, the trailer has a few funny moments which I hope make the film worth watching and also there seems to be a right mix of characters to make you laugh. Wouldn't be my first choice of the week and not even the last. This was what I'd written for this film's US release preview. After which, I'm shocked but not surprised that critics and cine goers just hated to watch this film. So now you guys decided what you all want to do with Prada's Nada. ;)

Ong Bak 3

Production Co.Iyara Films (Previous Film: Ong Bak 2)
Director - Tony Jaa (Previous Film: Ong Bak 2), Panna Rittikrai (Previous Film: Ong Bak 2)

In a nutshell....

Ong Bak 3 takes off from where Ong Bak 2 left. Tien is brought back by the Kana Khone villagers from the clutches of death. There he is taught meditation and how to deal with his Karma, but very soon his arch rival returns challenging Tien for a final duel.

Having not watched the earlier two films, I'm not a big fan of the Ong Bak series. But having said that, I've also read and heard a lot about it and have seen a few scenes on TV before. What I've known about this series is that it's gone down from good, to average to now, worst. Ong Bak 3 released a couple of months back in the USA and it was thrashed by the critics and the viewers, equally. Even the most ardent fans were dejected to see such a dip in the series' final instalment. The trailers do seem to be exciting but what I've learnt from this film's release abroad is that it's not worth a watch even if you're the greatest Ong Bak fan.
