US Releases

Larry Crowne

Studio – Universal Pictures (Previous Film: Bridesmaids)
Director - Tom Hanks (Previous Film: That Thing You Do!)

In a nutshell....

Larry Crowne, a Navy veteran, loses his job at a big-box store, and decides to enroll into community college to reinvent himself. He befriends a group of outcasts and also falls in love with speech professor, Mercedes Tainot.

Subjects such as rediscovering oneself and finding a meaning to life have been tapped before, many times. But, with Larry Crowne, things look and feel very different, and even new. Maybe it's just like rediscovering that kind of story altogether. After a 15 year break since his first and only film as writer/director had released,Tom Hanks is now ready for his second film. Larry Crowne seems to be an apt venture to return with, as the man at the helm. And as far as acting is concerned, it's a proven fact that Hanks is a master of such roles. The trailers are very impressive, and there seems to be a lot on offer. Julia Roberts is starring alongside Tom Hanks after 4 years since Charlie Wilson's War, and this pairing has a lot to expect from. Larry Crowne will see a great opening and it would've seen better business if it wasn't supposed to release in the same week as Transformers 3.

Monte Carlo

Studio – Twentieth Century Fox (Previous Film: Mr. Popper's Penguins)
Director - Thomas Bezucha (Previous Film: The Family Stone)

In a nutshell....

Grace, her stepsister, Meg, and her best friend, Emma, use their savings to go on a long anticipated trip to Paris. It turns out to be a big disappointment. When the three girls decide to spend rest of their holiday at a luxury hotel, Grace is mistaken to be a spoilt British heiress, Cordelia. Before she could reveal her true identity, the trio go through several misadventures, which they enjoy, that takes them to Monte Carlo.

Cool locations, three beautiful girls and a story that leads to confusions. What else can one ask for! Well, that's a difficult thing to answer. And this is the dilemma that puts directors in a tricky situation. The plot is lost and characters become tasteless. Let's just hope this one doesn't turn out to have the same fate as the ones of its kind, the ones that eventually turn out to be daft and hopeless. Selena Gomez is a huge name and has a massive fan following. The case isn't the same with Meester and Cassidy, but both are good enough to tolerate. If the script is well written and the execution is done well, we might just have a summer blockbuster in store. Such films are very hard to predict about, but my gut says it's not going to be special. Guess it'll be purely for the Disney audiences.

Terri

Studio – ATO Pictures (Previous Film: Casino Jack)
Director - Azazel Jacobs (Previous Film: Momma's Man)

In a nutshell....

Overweight and depressed 15 year old Terri starts to slack off in school and wear pajamas, to anger his teachers. Vice-principal, Mr. Fitzgerald, takes Terri under his wing and takes unconventional Monday morning counseling sessions for social outcasts at the school.

Official selection at the Sundance and SXSW Film Festivals, Terri is the story of an outsider, who never really tries to fit into the system. Stories have been told and retold about outcasts who either try to fit into the normal world or the ones who just stay put and enjoy that. Be it mutants or the specially gifted ones, outcasts have been heroes, but of different kinds. But in this film, the outcast is really an outcast. No special powers, no special recognition; just plain and simple. Obesity can mar anybody's teenage life simply because the obese are never accepted and liked as much as the ones who are fit, deemed fit for society. Jacob Wysocki's made a superb debut and word is that his chemistry with Reilly is exceptional. All Azazel Jacobs films have been liked more by the critics than the cinema-goers. The same might be the fate of this one, and with such huge competition at the box office, this film will face an uphill task to even make a profit. Having said that, it doesn't mean that this film isn't worth watching. I suppose it might be the last choice for the ones who love entertaining films, but for the ones who like serious stuff, this might just be the first choice.
