Bridesmaids

Studio
– Universal Pictures
(Previous Film: Fast Five)
Director - Paul Feig (Previous Film: I Am David)

In a nutshell....

Annie, whose life is in a mess, readily agrees to be the maid of honour for her best friend's wedding without knowing what one has to do in such a situation. Though expensive and lovelorn, she manages her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. All hell breaks loose when the women go to Vegas for a wild party.

Bridesmaids has an interesting subject and although we may have seen films based on bachelor parties and marriages before, this one has a different feel to it as it taps the women's side of having fun before the big day. Paul Feig is returning to directing a film after 8 years, and it seems this long sabbatical has helped him deliver a very good product. The cast is decent but the makers have produced some very good comedies which adds to the credibility of this film. I must admit that I thought it might turn out to be a cheap R rated comedy while I previewed it for the US viewers. This film did exceptionally well in the US and so I give it a POTW over Double Dhamaal because of its proven success.

Double Dhamaal

Studio – Reliance Entertainment (Previous Film: Shagird)
Director - Indra Kumar (Previous Film: Dhamaal)

In a nutshell....

The once corrupt police officer, Kabir is now a businessman who enjoys super luxury with lots of money at his disposal. The four good for nothing jokers Roy, Boman, Adi and Manav, envy Kabir's position and want to get a share of his riches. They fool him, his wife, Kamini, and sister, Kiya, to get into a business deal with them. Things get miserable for the jokers as the business venture turns out to be a nightmare for them. It is a cats and mice game between team Kabir, and the four jokers.

I must admit that Dhamaal was a real shocker. I'd not gone expecting it to be as entertainingly funny as it turned out to be. Naturally, the makers wished to cash in on the success of the film and the result, a sequel. Double Dhamaal is being promoted as a film that would entertain the audiences twice as as much as Dhamaal did. Well, I'd again be really shocked with surprise if it actually turns out to be true. With the addition of two actresses, or should I say items as eye candy, the sequel aims to add the Oomph factor as well. The makers claim that audiences complained of there being no prominent female character in the first film. I believe that was the real beauty of it, having an all male cast is no crime. With the inclusion of Mallika Sherawat and Kangana Ranaut, I think this film may falter in the hopes of winning the hearts of those who wanted women characters. No doubt Jalebi Bai is already very famous thanks to those movie goers. Yet, I believe in the characters and the actors who played those characters to give another stunner. The film will, without a shred of doubt, see a good opening. But whether it manages to rise above the standards it set with Dhamaal, remains to be seen. Personally, I'd be glad even if it matches those standards.
