Indian Releases

Bheja Fry 2

Studio – Watchtower Pictures (Debut)
Director - Sagar Ballary (Previous Film: Kaccha Limboo)

In a nutshell....

Hoping to win a cash prize through a game show, Bharat Bhushan boards a cruise. There he meets Ajit Talwar, a sadistic businessman, who is fleeing from the Income Tax department. Ajit learns about Bhushan's profession, and warns his subordinates to stay away from him. But, Bhushan gets closer to Talwar on learning about his investments in the media business.

Bheja Fry was an unexpectedly exceptional film which made each and everyone laugh out loud. Vinay Pathak's portrayal as Bharat Bhushan won him several accolades and the film was a breakthrough in terms of a low budget, no star cast entertainer. The debut director, sagar Ballary, had done a great job and now he comes back with a sequel. Although majority of the characters aren't returning for this one, this sequel has a value added cast. The plot is good, and I'm keen to see how Vinay Pathak and Kay Kay Menon's jodi turns out to be. Bheja Fry 2, despite several other releases this weekend, will rule the box office as far as the Indian films are concerned. It promises to be a thorough entertainer, and hopefully it will be better than the first one.

Green Lantern

Studio – Warner Bros. Pictures (Previous Film: The Hangover II)
Director - Martin Campbell (Previous Film: Edge Of Darkness)

In a nutshell....

Hal Jordan, a test pilot, is the first human to be granted the mystical ring which bestows the possessor with otherworldly powers such as membership into an intergalactic squad that is responsible to maintain peace within the universe. Parallax is the only one who poses a danger to the universe, and if Hal succeeds to overcome him, he would become the best Green Lantern ever.

The green man from the universe of DC comics is making his way to the big screen this weekend. That indeed is very exciting for the fans of the comic book series across the planet. But I, as a non reader, was sceptical when WB announced this film with Ryan Reynolds in the lead, wondering if that was the right decision. And it still remains a concern for me as the trailers don't suggest much about the worthiness of Reynolds. As far as the film itself is concerned, I think it should be safe in the responsible hands of Martin Campbell. By what is buzzing around, this film seems to belong to that category of films which are neither good nor bad. The actors aren't tested much in such films but and usually look like props in the story. But these films also end up reigning the box office thanks to the visual appeal and a ready fan base. Irrespective of whether Green Lantern turns out to be good or bad, I'm eager to watch this one just to find out whether we are in for a new superhero series.

Always Kabhi Kabhi

Studio – Red Chillies Entertainment (Previous Film: My Name Is Khan)
Director - Roshan Abbas (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Four different teens cross each others paths at St. John's as they not only enjoy the college romance and have fun but also discover the harsh cruelties of the world.

Always Kabhi Kabhi is a youth oriented film, and we have seen many such films in recent times. They story is a little ordinary and there seems nothing exceptional about t. Having said that, it should also be understood that ordinary stories leave extraordinary marks. Whether this mark is a positive one or otherwise remains to be seen. This film will ride on Shah Rukh Khan's name and will need a lot of word of mouth publicity to battle the competition. It will do a decent job on the box office, and considering SRK has a business mind, he would not invest in something that would not reap benefits. I think this film might just be worth a watch.

Bin Bulaye Baraati

Studio – Dhanraj Film Pvt. Ltd. (Debut)
Director - Chandrakant Singh (Previous Film: Rama Rama Kya Hai Drama)

In a nutshell....

AD is on the run, keeping himself hidden from the police. He takes away a van full of smuggled articles collected by Durjan Singh, a dangerous dacoit from Chambal. Now, the police, as well as Durjan, are all after AD. Things get confusing and one by one situations go against AD and his gang of thug friends.

This film is a coming together of 3 types of artists: flop stars, debutants and comedians. The makers, aiming to make a low budget entertainer, have combined elements which are cliched, even done to death. They have gone out of their way to promote the film by only using two raunchy, hinterland type of item numbers. One can only enjoy such kind of films by either giving up on logic, or by simply making fun of the film. This one will face massive competition from its Indian counterparts as well as the foreign releases. Though the item numbers and the gang of comedians might be able to draw some people to the theatres, this film has more than a mountain to climb.

The Resident

StudioHammer Film Productions (Previous Film: Let Me In)
Director - Antti Jokinen (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Juliette Deverau is a young doctor who moves to a new apartment in Brooklyn. She feels her house is haunted, and gradually learns that her landlord has formed a frightening obsession with her.

We've known, read and seen many stories and films that are based on a haunted house which straight off goes against this film. It's a difficult task for a debutant director to frighten the audiences when he hasn't got a great story. The Resident seems to be based on a few cheap thrills and cliched situations. There seems to be nothing new in the story or the way it's made. Therefore, I think the chances of this film doing well are bleak, especially when it faces some good competition this weekend. I'd watch it only if I were a fan of Hilary Swank because it did miserably in the US and UK.

Runtime - 91 mins
Genre - Horror/Drama/Thriller
