US Releases

Green Lantern

Studio – Warner Bros. Pictures (Previous Film: The Hangover II)
Director - Martin Campbell (Previous Film: Edge Of Darkness)

In a nutshell....

Hal Jordan, a test pilot, is the first human to be granted the mystical ring which bestows the possessor with otherworldly powers such as membership into an intergalactic squad that is responsible to maintain peace within the universe. Parallax is the only one who poses a danger to the universe, and if Hal succeeds to overcome him, he would become the best Green Lantern ever.

The green man from the universe of DC comics is making his way to the big screen this weekend. That indeed is very exciting for the fans of the comic book series across the planet. But I, as a non reader, was sceptical when WB announced this film with Ryan Reynolds in the lead, wondering if that was the right decision. And it still remains a concern for me as the trailers don't suggest much about the worthiness of Reynolds. As far as the film itself is concerned, I think it should be safe in the responsible hands of Martin Campbell. By what is buzzing around, this film seems to belong to that category of films which are neither good nor bad. The actors aren't tested much in such films but and usually look like props in the story. But these films also end up reigning the box office thanks to the visual appeal and a ready fan base. Irrespective of whether Green Lantern turns out to be good or bad, I'm eager to watch this one just to find out whether we are in for a new superhero series.

Mr. Popper's Penguins

Studio – Twentieth Century Fox (Previous Film: X-Men: First Class)
Director - Mark Waters (Previous Film: Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past)

In a nutshell....

Tom Popper is a businessman, whose life begins to change after he inherits six penguins. To accommodate the penguins in the right manner, Mr. Popper transforms him home into a winter wonderland. His professional and personal lives begin to face some difficulties courtesy his new friends from Antarctica.

Based on the children's book of the same name, Mr. Popper's Penguins is a live action comedy. For all those who read this story as kids, the best thing about the film is they would get to relive the good old days, and for those who haven't read it, the best part is Jim Carrey. Well, obviously Jim Carrey is a huge attraction in this film, especially considering the fact that he is coming back to the big screen, in live form, after two years. The story is very interesting, and I guess there will be plenty of comedy in the film. Mark Waters is a trustworthy director, and I'm sure this film will manage to do a fair job on the box office. It's a family film and therefore the weekend business should be impressive. Would've given it a POTW but for Green Lantern.

The Art Of Getting By

Studio – Fox Searchlight Pictures (Previous Film: The Tree Of Life)
Director - Gavin Wiesen (Debut)

In a nutshell....

George is a high school student who has a bad attitude towards his studies. An unexpected friendship forms between him and Sally, a popular but complicated girl, whom he has a crush on.

Official selection at the Sundance Film Festival 2011, The Art Of Getting By is a romantic comedy with a difference. Well, I know every filmmaker claims that but this is my take on the film after looking at the trailers. The Art Of Getting By doesn't seem to be the usual candy floss rom-com. Gavin Weisen is making his directorial debut with this film, and that might just go against this film's hype. But the pluses include Emma Stone, and the Sundance official selection. The pairing seems to be well done and it would be interesting to see if the chemistry works on screen. The film faces some stern competition from two big studio films and that's why I think it will face problems at the box office.
