US Releases

Hanna

Studio – Focus Features (Previous Film: Jane Eyre)
Director - Joe Wright (Previous Film: The Soloist)

In a nutshell....

Hanna is a unique teenage girl who has the strength, stamina, and the smarts of a soldier, thanks to her ex-CIA father, Erik's training, who wants her to become a perfect assassin. Hanna sets on a mission and journeys across Europe while terminating agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative, Marissa, who has her own secrets. As she nears her last target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence, and unexpected questions are raised about her humanity.

Spectacular was the only word that came to mind when I watched the trailer. It's shot very well, has got a decent story, and the setting is unusual. Saoirse is a great talent, and when pitted against an actress like Cate Blanchett, it'll be fascinating to see how the young girl has taken up the challenge. It will also be interesting to learn how the ever successful, Joe Wright, copes with the genres he has never worked upon. But talent always remains, which is why I think Hanna will be a breathtaking experience, and will do wonders on the box office too.

Arthur

Studio – Warner Bros. Pictures (Previous Film: Sucker Punch)
Director - Jason Winer (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Arthur Bach is a boozy playboy who is about to inherit his father's wealth if he agrees to marry an heiress, Susan Johnson. But he falls in love with a working class woman Naomi Quinn, and turns to his nanny Hobson, who would help him choose between money and love,

I haven't watched the original yet but I've heard it won 2 Oscars. This remake might not win an Oscar but I'm sure it would be no less interesting and humorous. The trailer has many funny scenes and I'm sure there'll be more in the film. What I'm most interested in are the performances of Helen Mirren and Russell Brand. It is going to be a tough decision to choose which comedy to watch this weekend, although I think Arthur might not have a great run on the box office.

Your Highness

Studio – Universal Pictures (Previous Film: Hop)
Director - David Gordon Green (Previous Film: Pineapple Express)

In a nutshell....

Thadeous has spent his life watching his perfect older brother Fabious embark upon valiant journeys and win the hearts of his people. Both the brothers now have to go on an epic quest to save their father's kingdom. Isabel is Thadeous's love interest, and when Belladonna is kidnapped by the evil wizard Leezar, the brothers must also save the virginal bride of Fabious.

When one film offers you so much it's almost impossible for it to falter, not atleast on all levels. Your Highness offers almost everything available on the filmy menu. It's got comedy, action, magic, it's adventurous, and also offers some eye candy. Pineapple Express was one hell of a ride, and if David Gordon Green can reproduce the same magic with Your Highness, then I think he will be regarded as one of the best comedy directors of recent times. With a marvellous cast involved and some super humour to go with it, I'm sure this film will have a great opening at the box office.

Soul Surfer

Studio – Affirm Films (Previous Film: Fireproof)
Director - Shaun McNamara (Previous Film: Bratz)

In a nutshell....

Bethany Hamilton, a champion surfer, is attacked by a 14 foot tiger shark which severs her left arm. With the help of her loved ones she gathers courage and strengthens her will power as she fights through the tragic situation to become a pro surfer.

Based on the true life story of Bethany Hamilton and the book she wrote about it, Soul Surfer might seem to be a good film but one cannot be so sure about it. Talk about too many cooks spoiling the broth, and we might be talking about this film. With 7 writers involved in different capacities, it really makes it difficult to have the film flowing in the perfect manner without looking a coming together of different heads and visions.
It doesn't have a bankable cast and Sean McNamara might have had a good career on television, but the same cannot be spoken about his filmy career. And with so much competition around, it won't be able to have a good run on the box office.

Runtime - 106 mins
Genre - Action/Drama/Sport
Rated - PG

Principal Cast

Anna Sophia Robb – Bethany Hamilton
(Last seen in: The Space Between)
Helen Hunt - Cheri Hamilton (Last seen in: Then She Found Me)
Lorraine Nicholson - Alana Blanchard (Last seen in: Click)
Carrie Underwood - Sarah Hill (Debut)
Dennis Quaid - Tom Hamilton (Last seen in: Legion)

Born To Be Wild 3D

Studio – Warner Bros. Pictures (Previous Film: Sucker Punch)
Director - David Lickley (Previous Film: Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees)

In a nutshell....

A documentary based on orphaned orangutans and elephants.

I haven't watched a documentary in IMAX 3D since a long time, but I'm very much awaiting this film's release in India as it's an interesting subject about 2 women who strive to give the orphaned elephants and orangutans new lives. There're a few cute moments in the trailer and some funny too. Born To Be Wild promises to give a good insight on what exactly Galdikas and Sheldrick do with these unfortunate animals. The best thing about the documentary for me is Morgan Freeman's narration. Besides, one can always expect great standards from a Warner Bros. product. So take your kids for this IMAX experience.

Runtime - 40 mins
Genre - Documentary
Rated - G

Principal Cast

Morgan Freeman – Narrator
(Last heard in: War Of The Worlds)
Birute Galdikas - Herself (Theatrical Debut)
Daphne Sheldrick - Herself (Theatrical Debut)

Principal Crew

Drew Fellman - Writer
David Douglas - Director of Photography
Mark Mothersbaugh - Music Director
