UK Releases

Unknown

Production Cos. – Studio Canal (Previous Film: The Tourist) + Many Others
Director - Jaume Collet-Serra (Previous Film: Orphan)

In a nutshell....

Dr. Martin Harris, or as he calls himself, wakes up from coma after 4 days, in Berlin, where he's on a vacation. An accident is the last thing he remembers but doesn't know the whereabouts of his beloved wife. Slowly he discovers that somebody has taken his identity and nobody, including his wife, seems to believe him. His existence is itself in question. Gina, the driver of the taxi which met the accident, is the only one who seems to believe him and can help him find the truth.

Although there have been a few films based on lost identity, Unknown has an amazing storyline and seems to be very interesting. It's got all the ingredients of a fantastic thriller and two powerful actors in Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger, no wonder she's the German taxi driver. It's already rocked the US box office and I think it wouldn't be any different in the UK. Certainly the pick of the week.

The Adjustment Bureau

Electric Shepherd Productions (Debut), Gambit Pictures (Debut)
Director - George Nolfi (Debut)

In a nutshell....

David Norris, an ambitious politician, falls for a contemporary ballet dancer, Elise Sellas. Mysterious men conspire to keep the lovers apart, and over time, David learns that those men belong to the Adjustment Bureau and are agents of Fate. Now David has to make a choice of letting Elise go or accept a pre determined path.

The trailer of this film is very engaging, which is why I believe that this can be one of the best films of this year. Besides, when you've got Damon at your disposal, you can be very sure of the film to be a huge success. I know this is George Nolfi's debut film but as a writer he's been magnificent and so I expect the same or perhaps even more from him in this film. As far as the performances are concerned, one can always be sure that Damon will do his utter best. The Adjustment Bureau is another contender to be the pick of the week.

Rango

Production Cos.DW Films, Industrial Light & Magic, GK Films, Nickelodeon Films, Blind Wink (Debut)
(Previous Film: No Strings Attached, Work In Progress, The Tourist, The Last Airbender)
Director - Gore Verbinski (Previous Film: Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End)

In a nutshell....

Rango is a pet chameleon who ends up in a Western town called Dirt. Rango has always thought of himself like a hero and also struts about the town dressed sheriff like. But the good ones have been sent to the grave by the local bandits and Rango's life is also in threat as the goons want him dead. Thus Rango is put in a situation which he always dreamed of but never really knew how to face it. Will he survive?

Well a Johnny Depp film is always interesting, especially his look and his charisma on screen. But this time it's about his voice, and just like in Corpse Bride, I think Rango will be very interesting. It is the first time we'll see a chameleon as the protagonist which is certainly imaginative and unique. Besides, one can always expect fireworks when Gore Verbinski directs a film. I believe this one's going to do a superbly on the box office and will also win the hearts of all young kids. Should be the pick of the week.

The Tempest

Production Cos.Touchstone Pictures, Miramax Films, Chartoff Productions
(Previous Film: Gnomeo & Juliet, Gnomeo & Juliet, In My Country,)
Mumbai Mantra Media (UK Debut), TalkStory Productions (UK Debut)
Director - Julie Taymor (Previous Film: Across The Universe)

In a nutshell....

Based on Shakespeare's tempest, this film has a female lead character named Prospera. Women practising the modern arts of alchemy were often convicted to witchcraft in the 17th century. Prospera and her four year old daughter are usurped by Prospera's brother and sent by a ship to and island where there is no society. Thus Prospera, a mother figure, becomes a father figure to Miranda. This leads to an intellectual struggle between Prospera and Caliban.

One can always expect a Helen Mirren film to be successful even before it hits the screens, especially when she's the protagonist. Besides, The Tempest is one of the best works of Shakespeare which makes this film even more likeable. The rest of the cast is also good and Julie Taymor has had a good streak of successful films. So what would come in the way of this film? I believe it'd be the CG dominated telling. It might have a tough time at the box office though as it faces strong competition from Rango, Unknown and The Adjustment Bureau.

Ironclad

Production Cos.Premiere Picture, VIP 4 Medienfonds (Previous Film: The Ward, Trade)
Mythic International Entertainment (Debut) Silver Reel (Debut)
Director - Jonathan English (UK Debut)

In a nutshell....

In the year 1215, a group of rebel barons of England force King John to put his royal seal to the Magna Carta, a document that would upheld the rights of free men. Despite his pledge, months later, the King reneges on his word and assembles a group of mercenaries to bring the barons and the country back under his tyrannical rule. Barring his way stands the mighty Rochester castle, a place that would become the a symbol of the rebel's momentous struggle for justice and freedom.

Many films take you to the past and show you around how it was back then. But very few actually manage to recreate the same magic of those days. I think Ironclad will recreate that magic. It has got that spark which a historical film needs to have, with all the right ingredients in the telling, with a nice cast to add to it. Based on a true event that changed the lives of many, this film will perhaps see a large audience turning up as it was an important event in the history of England.
