Indian Releases

Dhobi Ghat

Studios – Aamir Khan Productions, Cinema 73 (Previous Releases: Peepli Live, Debut)
Director - Kiran Rao (Debut)

In a nutshell....

Dhobi Ghat is the story of 4 very different people whose lives intersect and leave them altered forever. It is about love and friendship brewing in the vibrant city of Mumbai.

Aamir Khan Productions has a past full of successes and recognitions of cinema that might not be off beat but atleast different than most other contemporary films. And with Dhobi Ghat comes the most off beat film from all its ventures in the past. Kiran Rao and the leading women in this film all make a debut with a film which might not be seen by the masses at all. However, Dhobi Ghat seems to be a pure and real take in the most cinematic way involving the blending relationships with colours and art. This definitely isn't your usual entertainer but will hopefully win the hearts of the classes and the intellectuals. Seems it won't enjoy a success on the box office but then again who cares if this brings a 1 % change to the way Indian cinema is perceived today.

Hostel

Studio – Matrix Media (Debut)
Director - Manish Gupta (Previous Work: The Stoneman Murders)

In a nutshell....

Hostel is about the experiences Karan has during his time at a hostel. It's about the ragging and the politics of the hostel system.

Writer/director Manish Gupta has a liking for hard hitting films and he usually draws out characters from real life experiences and incidences. But the lead actors he's banking on this time around, haven't had the best of careers. However, the film seems to have the reality appeal and therefore should make the audiences go for it.

Little Fockers

Studios – DW Studios, Everyman Pictures (Previous Releases: Up In The Air, Dinner For Schmucks)
Director - Paul Weitz (Previous Work: Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant)

In a nutshell....

It has taken 10 years for Jack to impress his father-in-law Jack. Jack's suspicions about his favourite male nurse keep growing. When Greg and Pam's entire family including her ex flame Kevin, come for the twins' birthday party, Greg has to prove to Jack that he is capable of being the head of the family. But with all the misunderstanding and spying happening around, will he succeed?

I'm not a great fan of this series but I quite liked the trailer and all the actors seem to be in good form. The film got an average response when it released in the US last year but that barely means that we won't like it here. However, with the no. of impressive films releasing this week, it feels this film won't do too good here as well.

The Season Of The Witch

Studio – Relativity Media (Previous Release: Little Fockers)

DirectorDominic Sena (Previous Film: Whiteout)

In a nutshell….

Set in the 14th century, a crusader’s homeland is hit by Black plaque. The church assumes sorcery as the cause of it and deports a witch to a remote abbey where monks would perform a ritual to end the deadly disease. A priest, a grieving knight, a disgraced itinerant and a headstrong youth join a mission troubled by mythically intimidating wilderness and fierce conflict over the fate of the girl. Things change when they arrive at the abbey and they are pitted against some destructive forces.

I think this one shows some promise with a different combination of genres. Relativity Media’s latest ventures have been exceptional which is why I think Season Of The Witch can also be one of them. Although Sena’s Gone In Sixty Seconds and Swordfish weren’t cinematically brilliant but sure were entertaining enough.
